[Buses in Beijing]华宇 Huayu BJD-WG160B <Trolley-bus> 北京公交集团 BPT #85485 Front-right at Beihai Park

A BJD-WG160B 16m semi-low-floor non-air-conditioning rear-engine articulated trolley-bus built by Beijing Huayu Trolley-bus Plant

BJD-WG160B is the bigger one of the newest Beijing trolley-bus twins. Although only 15.85m it is the first rear-engine articulated trolley-bus in China. However, the new trolley-bus does not bring bus fans sense of pride.

BJD-WG160B is built on a FAW (China First Automobile Works) chassis and is propelled by a 120kW (161hp) AC motor, a product of CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive, the manufacturer of the control system with VVVF switch. The auxiliary power source is a lead-acid battery pack, storing electricity during regular run for off-wire operation when proceeding along or across streets where mid-air wires are not allowed or inconvenient to pull. The motor is longitudinally mounted at the back of the second section, powering the C-axle, the only driving axle.

The body exterior applies Jinghua’s newest, and also last, design, nicknamed “King Kong” from the “bellicose” headlights (and the rear lights, not shown in this picture). All axles are national-made and feature air suspension, while a national-made Ikarus hydraulic articulation bogie links the two sections. Applying a semi-low-floor design, the bus has all three entrances two steps above ground. The twin-leaf front door is narrow and non-symmetrical. The roof fence makes the bus much taller, but inside it there is no air-conditioner. The front information window is too high and curved, so that displays inside it is hard to be recognized.

No one considers the “King Kong” handsome, but the interior is more disappointing. Very undefined, the floor and roof panels began falling apart before the new buses were put into service. The most annoying of all, the quality of BJD-WG160B is extremely unsatisfactory. In winter 2009, half of the 100 new buses broke down, and at that time they had been in service less than six months. Line 102 and Line 109, which are carried by BJD-WG160Bs, borrowed buses from a variety of lines. The trolley-bus maintenance center did nothing except repairing these troublesome things, and Trolley-bus Division’s diesel buses had to use other centers to get repaired or maintained.

In the picture, Fleet No. 85485 (Trolley-bus Division, trolley-buses, code 485) is pulling into Beihai Park bus stop. Line 109 is an artery line along Dongdaqiao, Chaoyangmen, Xisi and Guang'anmen Inner/Outer Street, and is also substantial for connecting Beijing West Railway Station. Before BJD-WG160B, the 12m BJD-WG120A rigids were never sufficiently large to transport the huge number of passengers.

The photo is taken on March 14, the day Beijing welcomed its last snow in the winter. Although the lake in Beihai Park has already melted, the ancient architectures and trees are covered with white.
