Military Debate
A debate is taking place outside the Durham "Pals" recruitment office on the Edwardian town street at Beamish Museum. Under the watchful eye of the local policeman recruits are actively being sought to be drilled, uniformed and off to fight the First World War in the fields of France and Belgium.
The real Durham "Pals" were recruited in Durham (UK) on 10 September 1914 and became the 18th Battallion of the Durham Light Infantry. They went on to distinguish themselves on the WW1 battlefields of Europe and, in common with most other battallions, suffered considerable losses in the process.
