Frecciarossa at Firenze Statuto

North of Florence's main station, (Firenze Santa Maria Novella) at Firenze Statuto, an FS ETR 1000-class high-speed "Frecciarossa" ("Red Arrow") train approaches the platforms, though it will not stop here. Supplementing the slightly older ETR 500 class, these trains, built by AnsaldoBreda / Hitachi Rail Italy and entering service in 2015, operate at speeds up to 300 km/h or 190 mph in regular service, and run on most of Italy's main high-speed trunk lines, as well as on international services to Lyon and Paris (Spanish operator Iryo also uses the type).

Having entered the city from the south, it, like other services that do not terminate or originate at Florence, will proceed to Santa Maria Novella before reversing out of the station on its way back north towards Milan. A new through-running tunnel is currently under construction below the city center and main station to relieve high-speed through services of the awkward reverse move.
