On a frigid evening at Diversey Boulevard station in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, CTA workers toil to break up and scrape away ice and snow, packed down hard by the feet of rush-hour commuters. On the center two tracks of the North Side Main Line, Red Line trains pass, bound for the northern and southern extremities of the city.
