Foster, Evanston
A southbound Purple Line local train to Howard Street approaches the platform at Foster, just north of downtown Evanston on the CTA Purple Line.
The section of platform at the north end of this station was abandoned when fare controls were moved from ground level to the south end of the platform, reducing the berthing space for trains. Since the Purple Line only runs six-car trains at a maximum anyway, the unneeded part of the platform was abandoned and closed off.
To the left are concrete supports that held up a second platform used by southbound North Shore interurbans on the Shore Line Route. This separation was done to prevent free transfers to 'L' trains from the North Shore Line. Northbound NSL trains, which boarded from the extant 'L' platform, did not encounter this problem, since conductors collected fares on-board. Though the Shore Line Route was cut in 1955 (with the remainder of the interurban via the Skokie Valley Route folding in 1963) the platform built for it wasn't removed until the '70s.
