Trapped swan_2
Male swan trapped trying to get through a gap in the wire. The swan and his mate had somehow ended up in woodland the wrong side of the fence at Painshill and had then been spooked by a pair of cows. Ending up in a corner of the fence the male decided to try and get through the fence and managed to get its left wing trapped in an older section of fence and some brambles. It's mate dutifully remained with the male. I stayed with the swan while rescue was sought. A pair of wire cutters were used to cut an opening in the fence and with the head being held firm by one member of Painshill staff the Head Gardener lifted the swan out of the undergrowth. As soon as it was released it made for the lake seemingly none the worse for its experience. It's mate was then guided through the gap in the wire fence. Quite how they ended up in the woods we are not sure but suspect they may have been blown there when landing on the lake or had found a gap in the fence.
