Garstang Flood Control Gates

During times of extreme rainfall within the Garstang Flood Control Basin, control gates are raised in the River Wyre just downstream of the Millennium Green in Garstang, causing water to collect and flood upstream fields including the Green. This prevents a surge of water inundating downstream villages on the Fylde plane. As rainfall subsides, the gates are gradually opened allowing retained water from the fields to escape at a safe, controlled rate.

The Flood control system is managed by the Environment Agency and warning signs are displayed on the approaches to the Green prior to operation of the floodgates.
