Edinburgh: New College
New College is the home of Edinburgh University’s School of Divinity. The building dates from 1846 after the national Church of Scotland split (the Disruption of 1843). Dr Thomas Chalmers, the leader of the new Free Church of Scotland, was the first Principal of its ‘new college’ built on the site of Fox Hall.
Architect William Playfair designed the buildings to be an imposing expression of the confidence of the Free Church. It also reflected the wealth of the new church's supporters. William H Playfair, 1845-50; David Bryce, 1858-59; Sydney Mitchell, 1899; JM Dick Peddie, 1885 and 1901-3. portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB27689
The School of Divinity shares the site with the General Assembly Hall, the main meeting venue of the Church of Scotland.
