Dundee: D.C. Thomson, Meadowside

The Dundee headquarters of the family-held newspaper, magazines and digital media publisher D.C. Thomson at Courier Place, 22 Meadowside.

The American-style red sandstone building was designed by Scottish trained architects David Barclay Niven and Herbert Hardy Wigglesworth. Plans were first submitted in 1902 and the building was fully operational by 25 June 1906. The architects made the first Scottish use of Hennebique reinforced concrete piles, each supporting a load of 300 tons. This was necessitated by the marshy nature of the meadows it was built on.

The 10-storey and penthouse tower was added in 1960 and was designed by Dundee architect Thomas Lindsay Gray.

In 2017 approx. 600 staff members from across the group moved into renovated open plan office spaces following a major refurbishment. www.dcthomson.co.uk/2017/05/return-hq-dc-thomson/
