In 1633 Charles I created a new diocese of Edinburgh with St Giles’ as its cathedral. This Presbyterian church is still known as a cathedral but does not have a bishop.

The cathedral underwent significant restoration work in the late 1820s by the architect William Burn. Later in the nineteenth century publisher William Chambers financed major work in the 1880s by architect William Hay who had worked for the Gothic revivalist George Gilbert Scott.
