Marbles on Windowsill IMG_2366

Another windowsill shot. I do love this particular window. It is in my kitchen and faces west, so the afternoon sun comes through fairly often.. when the season's leaves permit.

These are marbles which have been found in the ground around here. Some when digging in the garden. Some when I was a child and we played digging in the dirt outside the house.

Then there is my wind chime, and of course, a trilobite.

Why "of course a trilobite"? My family has always been fossil crazy. Living in Cincinnati, which sits on top of a rich Ordovician fossil deposit, we grew up fossil hunting on construction sites and in creeks or expressway cuts. Anywhere the vegetation has been removed, you find the bed of a 400 million year old sea.

In my family, finding a trilobite was the pinnacle of fossil hunting success.

When my mother died, and all six of us siblings gathered to divide up her worldly goods, we had no troubles, no bickering or tension. Until we came to the trilobites. There were six of us, and only four trilobites. Oh dear.

We ended up devising a complicated sort of lottery, and the winners walked away with a trilobite each.

This photo sat in my files for several months because I was not happy with the light on the glass jar, and several other details. Tonight I tried several different filters on it, and ended up falling in love with this simplified version.
