Scots Church - Melbourne - 1874

Cnr Collins St & Russell St, Melbourne.

As in every corner of the British Empire, the contribution of the Scots cannot be understated. During the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, 90,000 Scotsmen migrated to Australia, a far higher number at the time than other British or Irish migrants. Many of the Scottish immigrants were skilled artisans, including businessmen, clerical workers, and professionals. As their numbers grew, a new Presbyterian church was needed to cater to the expanding congregation.

Designed by architect Joseph Reed (of Reed & Barnes), this is an excellent example of the Gothic Revival style. It is constructed using freestone and sandstone from the Barrabool Hills, near Geelong as well as limestone from Kakarnui (New Zealand). It was once the tallest building in the city.
