Commodity Fetish

The idea of a nice car conjures up images of success, wealth, and a reputation. People (most of the time) may buy a fancy car or customize it not for the car itself, but for the effect it has on others. The owner wants to project a certain imagery, especially to the opposite sex. A popular hip hop lyric states "She don't wanna fuck me, She wanna fuck my car". This directly addresses the notion of people not focusing on an item but the idea of what it represents.
