Queen Margrete I's Sarcophagus

This may be the single most exquisite memorial in all of Roskilde Cathedral. Margrete reigned as Queen of Denmark and Norway from 1387 to 1412, and as Queen of Sweden from 1389 to 1412. "Queen Margrete I was originally buried in Sorø in 1412 but her remains were transferred to Roskilde the following year. It is said that the event was celebrated with a ceremony lasting three days and that a gilded silver chalice and an altar cloth embroidered by the Queen herself were donated to each of the 50 altars in the church at that time. According to the inscription, the sarcophagus was paid for by Erik of Pomerania in 1423." Erik, who succeeded Queen Margrete as ruler of the Kalmar Union, was the her great-nephew and adopted heir.
