A Giant Fell Here, Sequoia National Park 5-18

This giant's skeleton lies in the woods among its descendants. Note the break in the trunk at the rear of the picture. The rest of the tree is longer than the part closest to you. The tree, had it fallen on a football field would have taken out both goal posts and some of the stands beyond.

These trees are hardy and have natural barriers from diseases and bugs. But . . . they have a shallow root system and so are doomed to fall when their height exceeds the roots strength to hold them up.
