Miko traditions date back to ancient Japanese women prophets who were believed to go into trances and convey the words of the gods. Modern miko are often seen at Shinto shrines, where they assist with shrine functions, perform ceremonial dances, offer omikuji fortune telling, and sell souvenirs.
