P-39 on ice

This is a scene I painted in watercolor on Arches paper (20 x 30 inches) of an actual incident that occured during WWII when this Lend-Lease (to USSR) P-39 Airacobra was being ferried to Alaska from Great Falls, Montana. The pilot, Lt. Delos Carpenter became lost and low on fuel and chose to belly-land the P-39 onto the ice of a lake in Canada's NW Territories, a short distance from the Yukon boundary. The airplane broke through the thin ice but did not sink and Carpenter, as day was fading, unscrewed the aircraft's nose panel and made a makeshift sled to haul some gear to shore where he made camp. Rescue came a couple of days later. December 6, 1943
