Canoe Race #1
Piscataquis County has its own canoe race each spring, one week after the more famous Kenduskeag Stream race in Bangor. Compared to Bangor, ours is a low-key affair: shorter (8 miles); an 11:00 a.m. race start; usually fewer than 200 boats; and no live television coverage. Racers finish in Dover-Foxcroft, across the road from Foxcroft Academy.
In the photo above, the leading boats of the first group to launch approach the Piscataquis River bridge in Sangerville, a short distance below the Guilford launch site.
