Its hard to believe that the almost tropical sunlit Castle Mill Basin nestling beneath the ruins of Dudley Castle was was formed 428 million years ago during the Silurian era, when the area was covered by a tropical sea. Today this precious slice of history is only accessible through canal tunnels dug by hand nearly 200 years ago.to excavate the limestone minerals within the basin (Dudley Canal Tunnel Trust)
