Lichen Stone Closeup

I've been studying rock and other natural surfaces for a long time. I try to produce a "random" style in my shapes and their surfaces, and this series seems to show that I've accomplished what I'm after. The "beauty" of these pieces is perhaps up to debate, but I think at least I've accomplished an effect that transcends the human touch. There is little evidence here of "my" work or my imposition of form or surface on the natural ingredients.

Some of these are unglazed even though I've given them the tag "glazes."

As a professional botanist and lichenologist I've spent many decades looking at the way organisms inhabit a microhabitat. That's what inspired this piece. I struggled with the glazes here but I'm pretty happy with the result.

People who see this piece in my office don't even comment. Either it's so weird that they just don't register it as a part of their visual environment or they're too nice to comment on its strangeness.
