Sawtooth leaf edge

Leaf cells are mostly built with cellulose, but this leaf shows the formation of lignin-rich tissue at the edge. Lignin adds hardness to woody plants and in this case, provides the leaf with a tough sawtooth edge. The selective value of such an anatomical feature is not well understood.
