Giant milkweed
Janet is posing next to a giant milkweed, not the typical plant we see in temperate North America. This plant was growing in SW Puerto Rico in a region that is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. UNESCO put aside this region because of its world-significant plants.
Woody milkweeds are a rarity, but in island ecosystems, many plant families that are normally herbaceous have evolved a woody habit for various reasons. This milkweed is one such example.
