Birch babies

Early spring brings out the birch leaves, slowly at first and then in a flush of growth. I am fascinated by the shapes that characterizes leaves as they unfold. I think these birch leaves are curled over like this because of their common (though distant) ancestry with ferns. By the way these leaves are good to eat when they first emerge. Don't worry, there are more that will take their place.
