Fireweed

Fireweed is a boreal (northern) plant that is weedy in disturbed areas like roadsides and burnt fields. The fireweed is a sort of slow-burning candle that marks time during the summer. The flowers bloom from the bottom upward, and in mid-summer, shown here, the middle of the inflorescence is in bloom. Later in the season only the top buds are in flower.

This species grows nicely in gardens or landscapes.

Imagine how closely this plant has evolved with its climate, in order to optimize flowering time during the warm months when pollinators are active.
