Banana shoots

Bananas reproduce asexually (vegetatively) by sending up new shoots. When an old shoot has produced its bunch of bananas it will be chopped down and the new shoot nurtured for the following year's crop. Partly because of this clonal habit, banana groves are susceptible to many diseases that invade monocultures, where most of the plants are genetically identical.
