Chestnut

I found this chestnut tree in England. It's probably a European chestnut, not the chestnut of North America, which was decimated by an invasive fungus in the early- to mid-20th century. Before the onslaught of chestnut blight, this species was the predominant hardwood tree in many temperate forests in North America, providing wood for hundreds of purposes for human use. All that survives of the N. American chestnut is shoots that resprout and thrive for a few years before succumbing to the fungal infection.
