Generation time

Gymnosperms like this fir produce cones (and seeds) over a period that lasts up to two years. This slow generation time is in contrast to angiosperms (flowering plants), which produce seeds annually. The faster generation time (a type of reduction...which is the product of evolution) of angiosperms is a factor in the great diversity of this plant group, and a huge range of morphological and ecological features, which are much more limited in gymnosperms.
