Leaf architecture

These are compound leaves of a legume plant called the "sensitive plant." It grows in the tropics. The leaflets are acutely sensitive to disturbance and fold up (see upper left) when touched.

 

Many legumes have compound leaves similar to these, and legume tree species provide mottled shade that provides an excellent contrast to urban architecture.
