Glands

I found this lovely little flower on the Maine coast last summer. I don't know its name but I do know that it lives in a hostile, salty environment. How does the plant thrive in this environment? Well, it deals with salt by excreting it through glands. You can see the leaf glands in the photo. They are small whitish dots that cover the surface of the leaves. Like many other beach plants that secrete salt through glands, this plant tastes salty!
