Another figure I was able to purchase for relative cheap was the S.H. Figuarts Great Ape Vegeta, the largest Figuarts release to date.

For the uninitiated, Great Ape Vegeta the result of an uncut Vegeta being exposed to the full moon, and is the origin of the Super Saiyan form.

Standing at approximately 15 inches tall, this heavy monkey isn't the biggest toy I've ever handled, but that doesn't make it any less thrilling. Easily dwarfing 99% of the Figuarts catalog (the exception being Hulkbuster) and so heavy that it actually comes with a stand... a USEFUL stand, even.

The actual contents of the box are relatively light, but again, it's about size with this. You get the figure, a pair of clenched fists, pointing left hand, pair of hands crushing Goku, injured eye faceplate, tail, tail stub, mini Yajirobe, and the aforementioned stand.

Most people are familiar with Goku, but Yajirobe may have been forgotten. He's the squtat Samurai looking guy who generally is on Senzu bean delivery duty, but is also famous for being the guy who finally cut Vegeta's tail.

The sculpt overall looks fantastic, and like most of the recent Dragonball stuff, really captures the character. The added bonus of Great Ape Vegeta is that there really is no recycling of existing parts... everything is a new design, and it's unlikely they'll be used anywhere else either. Of particular note is the work on the head and the battle armour.

For a figure of this size, Build Quality is the most important factor. While this is the largest Figuarts, Tamashii Nations has done other large figures before, so in terms of joint capabilities Vegeta was in good hands. Tolerances are fantastic, though I suspect they could have made the grooves for the face plate and upper nostril a bit deeper, as they tent to fall off easily - fists on the other hand fit great. There is sufficient clearance for joints to move and the quality of the plastic itself.

All-in-all, what you'd expect for a $180 USD plastic monkey.

Articulation itself is always interesting because figures get to a size where when you go bigger, while the points of articulation are there, the bulk can get in the way of movement. Great Ape Vegeta has ankles, double jointed knees, hips with this twist, limited waist, mid torso, shoulders with lateral movement., bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, wrist, slight neck and head movement, jaw, and the tail.

Overall, Vegeta can pull off all your wildest King Kong style poses, mimicking giant movements, but the tight quarters of the head and neck area result in limitations on how wide the jaw can open.

Paint wise... well it's a Figuarts. Honestly, nothing to report wrong here with the added benefit of being a larger figure which results in an overall cleaner look because they're able to apply greater precision.

So yeah.. Great Ape Vegeta. A lovely fellow and giant plastic fun. He's not the most nimble poser, but he's a giant ape so... yeah. The included accessories are sparse, but are very relevant to the character. About the only thing that would have been even more awesome is if he came with an energy blase.

What is more likely to be a deterrent is if you're not use to large figures, you probably don't have space for him. But if you can find some space, this is truly a one of a kind Dragonball release you shouldn't miss out on.
