Why am I holding a sign with the number 11 on it? 11 is the number of pounds I've lost since January 3, 2013! What am I doing? Well, I took a step back at the end of last year and decided to refocus my weight loss efforts. I had put some weight back on without really trying (an unfortunate side effect of the autoimmune disease I have - Hashimoto's thyroiditis). I also discussed this all with my endocrinologist and learned that on top of the thyroid problem (which we are working on balancing), I also have hypoglycemia. The only way to really control this is to go on a low glycemic index diet. Around the same time that I was finding all of this out, a colleague of mine started talking about this book he read and diet that he was following. It was written by a cardiologist in Palm Springs (Dr. Gundry), who at one time was obese himself. It's all about how to eat to lose weight, get healthy, and avoid seeing him for heart problems. The basic premise of the diet is progressively going back to what humans ate thousands of years ago when we were still hunters/gatherers...before the bulk of our food became so processed. It's so much more than a diet book, though. Dr. Gundry talks about how we are genetically programmed to eat whatever has the most calories and can find the fastest (i.e. the fattiest, most sugar-laden foods), which isn't necessarily the best thing for our waistlines. There are even hidden sugars in many of the foods we eat - namely corn, which most processed foods contain some form of. Just by nature, this is a low glycemic index diet, and it doesn't make you count calories, points, fat grams, etc. My travel schedule is so amazingly hectic right now, I needed something easy, and this seemed like just the ticket. Dr. Gundry walks you through what to eat, what to avoid, and what to eat only in moderation. He gives tips on what to eat when you're in an airport or if the only thing available is McDonalds. I basically just eat lots of veggies, some meats, nuts (raw and unsalted), and some fruits. And you know what? I feel MUCH better eating this way. After a month, I'm finally getting to the point where I don't really crave sugar anymore...berries are PLENTY sweet on their own without any sweetener whatsoever. Here's hoping the number on my little sign keeps going up, and the pounds keep going down! If you are interested, the book can be found here:
