A weak ray of sunshine, behind me, in the middle of a rainy afternoon in a March that was twice as rainy as average and in contrast to the dry springs of previous years, especially before 2023.
After the great drought of 2021-2022, the karst aquifers have recovered and now, after a long period of water deficit, every rainy period is followed by the recurrent flooding of the clay-flysch bottomed basins (polje) and temporary (or ghost) karst lakes.
Karst offers "new spectacles" for those who do not know it thoroughly, accustomed to porous and poor calcareous terrain where there is no surface water except for a few streams in valleys dug until they reach the impermeable layer, but the large voids of the karst subsoil host aquifers that, when they fill up completely, overflow into the affected areas.
