Very Early First Snow on the Julian Alps, here the Montasio Mountain Chain from Its Plateau at 1530m a.s.l.; Julian Alps, FVG, Italia
13-September-2024
A cold front of arctic origin has brought a severe storm to the entire area I follow and a temperature collapse with consequent snowfall that, in the interior of the Julian Alps, has come down to the valley floors, with a sprinkling of white down to only 700m above sea level, especially in the Tarvisio area (Italy) and in the highest part of the Sava valley (Slovenia).
Snow on the highest mountains of the south-eastern Alps (generally from 1800-2000m above sea level) is not uncommon with late summer intense cold fronts, but snow on the valley floors at 700m in the first half of September is absolutely rare, even in relation to the last century, certainly colder.
This situation is even more extreme if you consider that early September, up to a week before this meteorological event, broke many heat records for this month at the end of a long period of oppressive African heat, that, in the mountain valleys mentioned, made August 2024 the hottest ever, beating that of 2003 which seemed insurmountable.
In the Tarvisio area, totally snowed during the evening-night between 12 and 13 September 2024, at the beginning of this September, there were still maximum temperatures close to 30°C and for Tarvisio small town, the whole summer (1 June-31 August) of 2024 was the hottest ever!
