Simple Orton Methods
Here are some simple methods to get the "Orton-Effect". Note that some of the images are a bit exaggerated in order to make the effect easier to see.
Method 1 is described here, Pisco Bandito told me Method 2, the Methods 3 and 4 where described in the Orton-Group and Method 5 is the way I do it.
As for "Fog + Original": I'm not quite sure if you should call this an "Orton-Effect", however the result is simiar.
Any comments and suggestions are welcome.

* dublicate layer
* set mode of upper layer to "screen"
* merge layers
* dublicate merged layer
* use "Gaussian Blur" (with a radius of 15) on the top layer
* set mode of the top layer to "Multiply"
* merge layers
* dublicate layer
* set mode of upper layer to "smooth edges" (I don't kno if its called that way in english since I use the german version of gimp - in wich it's called "Weiche Kanten")
* use "Gaussian Blur" (with a radius of 15) on the bottom layer
* adjust the color of the top layer (the sharp one) with the "curves" tool. Brighten up the bright parts and leav the dark one dark.
* set the transparancy of the top layer to 80%
* increase contrast by +75, reduce brightness by -30
* dublicate layer
* use "Gaussian Blur" (with a radius of 15) on the top layer
* set the transparancy of the top layer to 30%
* adjust saturation of individual colors: yellow +50, red +50, blue -50, green +30
* dublicate layer
* use "Gaussian Blur" (with a radius of 15) on the top layer
* increase brightness and contrast of top layer by 20%
* set mode of upper layer to "overlay"
* set the transparancy of the top layer to 80%
* dublicate layer
* convert top layer to grayscale
* use "Gaussian Blur" (with a radius of 15) on the top layer
* dublicate bottom layer
* use graylevel layer as layere mask for the middle layer (and delete graylevel layer)
* set mode of middle layer to "burn"
* merge layers
* dublicate layer
* use "Gaussian Blur" (with a radius of 15) on the top layer
* set mode of top layer to "multiply"
* take one picture with and one without an foggilizer filter
* align them
* set mode of "foggilizer" layer to "burn"
