大洲市　Ozu

Best viewed on black. Really!

 

Ozu-shi, on Shikoku Island, Japan is not quite so rural any more, -nor are the mountains quite so steep (almost this steep though!). None the less, this is how I remember it, this is the image that sticks in my mind and imagination.

 

Sumi-e on 'rice' paper, unmounted, 14 by 53 inches (35 by135 centimeters).
