For purification before approaching the shrine.
As I understand it, this shrine is dedicated to the moon god, Tsukiyomi no Kami.
Ha! I just had an epiphany! Japanese see a rabbit on the moon whereas we westerners see a man in the moon. So! That is probably why the rabbits guard this shrine.
A new friend of mine here on Flickr, Shin:-), noted he wasn't familiar with the guard rabbits at the shrine in Urawa, -even though, compared to me, he lives right next door to them! :-)
Hence I'm posting these pictures I took there at 調神社 (spelled right?).
