Learning the Ropes

It appears that this is a nautical expression. In the days of sail, naval recruits had to climb the ropes and learn which ropes controlled which sails etc. Only just to confuse things further, the ropes were known as sheets.

 

OK, so these young lads (boys really) had to climb the rigging on a ship at sea. Maybe 40ft or more high. A ship that was moving. Up and down, side to side, rolling about, in the wind, in the rain, in the dark.

 

Best viewed with a brown paper bag. (Preferably a big, strong one)
