PIRILAMPO (VAGA-LUME): Inseto coleóptero, com órgãos fosforescentes situados na parte inferior dos segmentos abdominais. Encontra-se na família dos lampirídeos, e na dos elaterídeos, onde os focos luminosos são os dois olhos. São, em regra, de cores pouco vistosas, alguns amarelados ou pardo-claros, com faixas negras, cabeça grande, arredondada na frente; dão grandes saltos quando de costas. As larvas, predadoras, nutrem-se de madeira em decomposição ou de raízes e base dos caules das plantas. A fosforescência vem-lhes duma reação entre um fermento e outras substâncias químicas.
