The struggle was real. . .
Every so often, a coal train would be rerouted down the Mississippi River, then east over the C&I. Given the rolling nature of the C&I, especially west of Rochelle, heavy trains would struggle through this stretch.
I was in Milledgeville, Ill, catching action on the north side of the C&I along Ilinois Route 40 on July 11, 1998. In the summer, the morning sun lights the north side of the tracks, making for some interesting angles.
I could hear this coal train coming for miles and it was not having an easy time of it. If there was no crew change in Savanna for this train, this crew out of La Crosse likely was going to cut it close on time before it reached Aurora or Eola.
