South St. Paul Transfer near Midway 6-15-88
Four SD18s are down to a walk as they drag a S. St. Paul-East Minneapolis transfer up the hill near Westminster and past the location of Minnesota Transportation Museum. It was 102 F when I took this photo, and the traction motors on the second unit were already in the early stages of overheating. The engineer did get this train off the grade soon enough that the second unit did stay online for the entire trip. Had it dropped off line, this train would have stalled immediately.
