Fluted lava

Grand Canyon, just above Lava Falls. This lava boulder has been scoured out by the abrasive flow of the Colorado River. This process halted in 1963 when Glen Canyon Dam began controlling the river flow; this erosion likely only occurs at higher flow rates than the dam releases, and in any case the boulder is too high above the river now.
