Seasonal Seddon (re- scan)

A picture which I took circa 1980 which represents my sole involvement with operating a Seddon RU, a type touched on here recently. Although this bus, WET 176L (and its sister 172) were quite youthful, only 176 made it into service and even then didn't acquit brilliantly. When it worked well, it worked well, but occasionally it would throw a wobbly and do daft things like chuck its water out or have a but clenching moment when the brakes wouldn't do as you expected.

Plaxton Derwent bodied WET 176L had been new to Rotherham Corporartion in late 1972 and passed with that operation into South Yorkshire PTE in 1974. Circa 1980 the PTE had had enough of the type and these immaculate buses passed to the Barnsley breakers. It was via the latter that 176 ended up with us at Stonier's at the beginning of the '80s.

Here in scenic seasonal conditions our newly acquired and as yet un-repainted bus is seen on the back roads between Talke Pits and Tunstall whilst operating the direct service between the two points via Chatterley. The latter service had recently been given up by PMT and was down to a handful of journeys per day. Ten years beforehand it had been possible to get a bus over this route at 11pm on a Sunday evening.
