Works buses.
It seems almost inconceivable nowadays in a car orientated UK that until relatively recently, factories operated their own buses for staff transport. Now even the concept of a sufficiently large UK factory would nonplus most.
This was a regular scene outside the Austin Reed / Chester Barrie factory at the station end of Weston Road Crewe at one time with coaches parked between bouts of activity. Prior to this duo, I recall the spot being occupied by a trio of Bedford Duple Viceroys. HUH996W, a Bedford YMT with Plaxton Supreme IV bodywork had been new to Evans coaches of Senghenydd in South Wales. After service here at the clothing factory, it joined the Kidsgrove based Stanway's Coaches fleet, where for some inexplicable reason it gained the nickname 'The hug'. I'm sorry, but neither I or BLOTW can offer any information on the history of Bedford YRT Duple Dominant RMA 609P.
For the record, the coaches are no more, and the factory was demolished to make way for another much needed DIY superstore... not.
