Brutonian in Shaftesbury

A picture taken adjacent to the 'Hovis' street of TV advert fame. Not filmed in some old world northern town, but here in Shaftesbury.

The bus is one of (I think) a trio of experimental lighter weight AEC Reliances operated by London Transport in comparison with their battleship like AEC RFs. They were LTs small RW class and also unusually were fitted with a centre exit. After a comparatively short working life in the Capital, this one, 497 ALH, found work with Chesterfield Transport in who's colours it is seen here shortly after acquisition by Brutonian.

It seems that the mountainous (to use a modern day derisory term) staircase was no object to the carriage of quite substantial baby conveyances, witness the pram stowed behind the drivers' cab!

Thankfully the bus has survived, and I encountered it a few months ago quite by chance in a storage facility.
