The Leaf Metaphor

The Leaf Metaphor: The circulation system of a leaf shows a hierarchical and fractal organization of paths from the principal leaf stem vein to three levels of sizes and lengths below it. Though not strictly dendrite, almost all vein connections are 3-way.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leafs as metaphors, reveal essential characteristics of New urban, contemporary networks:

"Arteriality", meaning uninterrupted continuity (red and purple lines) and "Locality" meaning discontinuous, small segments of conduit that intersect with and stop at another conduit (red dots marking start and fend). These networks also reveal: Hierarchy of sizes and lengths as well as a fractal distribution of conduit sizes and lengths.

This analysis and more can be found in the book "remaking the city street grid" published by McFarland.
