A Fused Grid Community - Saddlestone, Calgary, Alberta
The first built example of a community laid out using the Fused Grid network model is taking shape in Calgary, Alberta. The principle idea of the model is that pedestrians (particularly kids) have movement priority within the neighbourhood. Open spaces and paths connect the entire neighbourhood that make street crossing infrequent or unnecessary. Cars invariably slow down because of the short block distances and frequent turns. The result is a tranquil, safe, restorative, healthy environment where social ties can grow. (See the plan of the neighbourhood in this photo-stream and articles about the Fused Grid in Wikipedia, the Web and in fusedgrid dot ca)
