Sunrise
During our Death Valley trip, my brother and I got up early and hiked out to the dunes every day before dawn to catch the early light. A couple of days were cloudy and the light was diffuse and not very interesting, but on this day we were rewarded with a brilliant mackerel sky illuminated from below. At first light the clouds were a soft purple, but as the sun rose a bit higher they erupted in brilliant yellows and reds that gave a golden glow to the dunes.
In this photo, the sun's rays have yet to graze the tops of the mountains, but the clouds are fully illuminated. Virgas (rain showers that don't reach the ground) are also visible near the horizon, highlighted in yellow.
