Edge of the Dunes
The edge of the Mesquite Flats dunefield in Death Valley sits on the broken and eroded remnants of clayey sediments that were deposited by Lake Manley, a lake that filled much of the valley floor during wetter times. These sediments have cracked as they dried and parts have been eroded by wind and, in recent years, by human traffic. Small sand dunes migrate across the playa and creosote bush and mesquite grow in the shallow sands.
Looking east towards the Funeral Mountains in mid morning.
