First Stars
The last glow of the setting sun lights the sky between Tucki Mountain and the Cottonwood Mountains in Death Valley. The stars are starting to appear, leaving faint trails on this image. Death Valley, and particularly the peaks around it, have some of the darkest skies in the continental US and are excellent for star-gazing.
The bright spots in the foreground are shiny surfaces of rocks strewn across the fan surface, reflecting the faint light from the sky. The Mesquite Flat dunes are visible at the base of Tucki Mountain in the middle left of the photo, and the small town of Stovepipe Wells is just out of sight to the right of the dunes.
Two minute exposure on Ilford Delta 100.
