Bog Lake Vista

Bog Lake is located north of Grand Rapids, MN. It is a large peat bog that has almost completely filled in a shallow lake; open water is only present on the far north edge of the lake. Interestingly, substantial areas of Bog Lake are "floating bog" - that is, the peat mat is floating above some depth of water beneath. Weird to walk on as it sinks with your weight. And if you slip through the peat mat, it may not go well for you...

Cotton grass and pitcher plant are common on Bog Lake, along with a number of other interesting plants.

This photo was taken in late October a half hour or so before sunset. The sky was threatening but a few shafts of sunlight lit the far side of the bog. I took one more photo after this (a color one) and then it started to sleet like you can't believe. Had to wipe off and dry out all my gear. Hope that color negative turns out! ;-)
